There are also day-of coordinators who help you pull off the actual day of your wedding, like making sure you have a timeline to follow for every part of the day. These different types of planners will have different costs and can charge fees differently so make this the first question you ask.
What exactly will his/her responsibilities be? There are going to be a lot of items on your to-do list leading up to the wedding. Make sure your wedding planner gives you a clear idea of what you can expect will still be your responsibility and what his or her responsibility will be. Some planners want to give you the freedom to decide. Some will allow you to communicate your wedding vision to them and then they will execute it and make most of the decisions. Most planners will find several vendor options and then let you decide between them. Find out what their style is so you can be prepared for the amount of involvement you will have.
How do they prefer to communicate? You’ll be in touch with your wedding planner a lot. Make sure you know how he or she prefers to be contacted. Do they like to be e-mailed most? Have they ever worked at your venue? If you have a venue chosen already, ask your planner if they have any experience planning weddings there. It’s an added plus if they have worked with the venue owner, staff, and vendors before. They’ll know how couples normally use the space or any important details about pulling off your wedding there.
Can they provide a list of references? A great way to find out if someone is a good fit for you and your wedding is to talk to previous brides and grooms that worked with them. Ask the planner if he or she has a list of references you can call or e-mail. This way, you can hear about their services from another couple’s point of view. This can be super helpful since you’ll likely be in their shoes in a matter of months!
